Save Energy by Replacing Your Spa Cover

Floating Soft Top Foam CoverSpa covers are essentially used to protect the hot tub, as well as insulate it while it is not being used. You might think it’s just an insignificant component or accessory to your tub, but what you may not realize is that a spa cover is actually one of the most important parts to your hot tub.

The cover provides insulation to your tub, and lowers the amount of evaporation that occurs. This ultimately saves you money in energy bills and water costs over the long run. In addition, covers provide protection to your spa, keeping debris and critters out when it is not in use.  It also serves as a safety tool, particularly if you have young children around that could accidentally fall into the tub’s water.

As important as this component of your hot tub is, it’s important to take good care of it. For starters, you may want to consider investing in cover lifters, which make it very easy to remove the cover from the hot tub. These covers are quite heavy, so the odds of it being dragged on the ground when being taken off without lifters are quite high. By dragging it on the ground, you risk damaging the vinyl, which will therefore degrade the cover.  A cover lifter also keeps it safely off the ground when it is not in use.

Dream Star Hot Tub CoverAfter years of usage, your cover will need to be replaced. No matter how well you take care of it, after a certain amount of time, and wear and tear, it will need replacement. For instance, the chemicals that are regularly added to the water will eventually erode the foam core of the cover. When this happens, mould and bacteria are allowed to fester in the cover, which poses a health hazard.  The sun and elements also wreak havoc on the outside of the cover.

Other options aside from standard covers are available. For instance, thicker covers are available that offer a little more strength if you need it. These are ideal for those who live in climates that experience a great deal of snowfall, as they hold more weight and provide better insulation.

There are also floating covers that add an extra thermal barrier to keep the heat inside the water.

Therasauna Wood Benefits

Therasauna WoodWhen you buy Therasauna, you buy a complete package of assembled quality components providing the best infrared sauna features that go beyond individual elements.

From the type of emitter (ceramic), the type of wood used in the construction of the sauna (aspen), the infrared micron output (in the beneficial 9.4 micron wavelength range), where it is made (USA), and the standards under which it is approved (CSA, CE), to the patented control system, years of development have resulted in the ultimate infrared sauna cabin.

Non-toxic aspen wood is used in the interior. The solid aspen wood bench has a curved side and a flat side, so seating can be adjusted to your preference. Even the backrest and accessory such as cupholders, magazine rack and footrests are made of aspen wood. The bench is also solid so you sit comfortably and feel the support since this bench alone weighs more than some competitors side wall.

Heavy duty TherasaunaThe Therasauna is a solid, heavy duty sauna made of aspen wood vs. cedar used in many infrared saunas.

Cedar wood can produce toxins and depending on the type of cedar can be considered everything from an irritant to a sensitizer and can even cause a runny nose, adverse effects on asthma, nervous system and even kidney problems (diureses) as quoted on the Wood Database. Note that very few woods are actually toxic in and of themselves, but many woods do have the potential to cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Therasauna Infrared Sauna Features

Therasauna infrared sauna featuresTherasauna is a high end infrared sauna manufacturer which has been manufacturing these cabins in the U.S.A. for over twenty years.

When you buy Therasauna, you buy a complete package that addresses alot of different issues with features that go beyond the type of emitter (ceramic), the type of wood used in the construction of the sauna (aspen), the micron output (in the beneficial 9.4 micron range), where it is made (USA), and the standards under which it is approved (CSA, CE), but it is a whole package deal that encompasses even more.

The patented Touchview control is the cornerstone to the patented system which itself has been around for over sixteen years.  The controls allow the cabin to heat to produce 9.4 micron infrared output for the duration of your sauna session. The micron output is controlled by controlling the amount of electricity going to the solid ceramic emitters.

Therasauna classic lineAdditionally, the sauna can be personalized with the MPS – micron power select – control by allowing for individual adjustment of heater sections in the sauna.  If the emitter on the bottom is too warm for the ankles, simply go to zone 3 and tone it down to reduce the intensity of the heat for individual control.

You can personalize the sauna to your liking. Nobody else in the industry can offer this degree of customization.

There is also relaxing mood music or bird chirping included in the control system along with a 7 day reprogrammable timer, so you can have the unit come on at say 7am so it is available and ready to use when you are.  There is a “his and hers” feature, so there can be 2 sets of on times programmed.

The type of wood used in the main line is aspen wood which is non-toxic in contrast to cedar that can gas-off certain toxins such as found on a cedar hope chest or drawer that gives off a natural toxin or terpin which is an insecticide and ideally not what you should be sitting in.

The solid bench which is a curved park bench on one side or a flat bench on the other side can be turned to the side you prefer. The bench is solid and may weigh more than some cheap infrared sauna cabin walls on its own. The aspen wood main line Therasauna is made right here in the U.S.A.

Therasauna infrared saunasTherasauna accessories include a light therapy system, stereo music system (AM/FM/CD) and aromatherapy as well as additional backrests and footrests, magazine rack and cup holder.

New for this year is the affordable Therasauna classic line that is made from lower priced hemlock instead of aspen wood, a simpler yet effective control system and other reduced features allowing for a low price point, entry level Therasauna model for anyone.

What is an Infrared Sauna

Therasauna infrared saunasFar infrared comes from the sun and is the healthiest and most beneficial ray that comes from the sun.  If you look at the light spectrum, we are not producing gamma rays, x-rays or uv-rays. The studies and reports will say that the vital rays your body has use for is from 4-14 microns or some studies will say 5-15 microns. If you look at the light spectrum, this is a small range, but is the most beneficial.

The 9.4 micron output will penetrate the deepest in the human body (1 1/2 -2 inches deep) and resonate and break up the water molecules. Another reason that 9.4 microns is the most beneficial is that the human body produces this all the time. So this is the level that resonates best with the body.

They can see you with night vision glasses because the body produces 9.4 micron output which is in the infrared spectrum. If your body produces at 9.4, you will receive it best at 9.4.

Better Life infrared sauna

The far infrared sauna cabin can be setup almost anywhere in the home and plugs into a 120 volt power outlet.  The resulting sweat output happens at a relatively lower ambient temperature than traditional hot rock saunas and without any steam. This is a dry sauna but the toxins released from the body through the sweat output is up to 5 times greater than from sitting in a much hotter traditional sauna.

Several benefits of infrared saunas include detoxification and sweating out impurities, relaxation, increasing blood flow and whole host of other health benefits. See our video on the health benefits of infrared saunas and Therasauna.

In the last few years, the amount of EMF (electromagnetic field) from any electronics and electrical wiring is a concern. EMF can be measured with a gauss meter. If you put a gauss meter near a Therasauna, the EMF are very, very low.  This in contrast to some infrared saunas on the market that use plastic type heaters (solo carbon) with wires running in the sheets of plastic – basically a wall of electricity – of course these give off very high EMF readings.

Health Benefits infrared saunaTherasauna has very low EMF, especially compared to other infrared saunas on the market. There will always be some residual EMF, but nothing like the higher readings from solo carbon type heaters as well as other infrared sauna setups.

The retail customer that bought a Therasauna almost 20 years ago still can get replacement parts, unlike many others who have come and went over the years.

Others may say they are made in the USA, but they are actually bringing in saunas from overseas.  The main line of Therasauna uses aspen wood and U.S. based technology.

Hot Tub Water Test Kits and Test Strips

Spa Breeze ChemicalsTesting spa water is simple with either a water test kit for chlorine based spas or test strips for chlorine or bromine based spas.

A water test kit is preferred by some as it is said to be more accurate, but the test strips to an equally fine job of alerting the spa owner to a chemical imbalance in the hot tub.

A water test kit comes with a dual chamber plastic vile with level readouts. On one side, a test for chlorine is done by adding 5 drops of OTO to the water sample. On the other side, the test for water pH is done by adding 5 drops of phenol red to a sample of hot tub water filled to the fill line.

The caps are put on and the viles are shaken up to get the correct readout.  Then adjust the water’s sanitizer and pH levels.

Water test strips usually come in viles of 50 strips per container and they come in all sorts of different configurations.  A popular test strip is the one that has 4 tests – chlorine, bromine, pH and alkalinity.  Of course it won’t test for both chlorine and bromine because you should be using either bromine or chlorine as the sanitizer, never mixing the two.  But this allows hot tub owners of both bromine and chlorine based spas to purchase the same test strip without worrying about it in case they eventually want to switch sanitizer after a water change, or to just not worry about being sure they purchased the correct test strip.

The pH levels on the test strip will indicate over/under and allow for adjustment to within the 7.2-7.6 range.  Some suggest it is ok to go as far as 7.8 pH and still be ok.

Spa breeze chemicals Hot Tub Outpost

Keep test strips in a dry place to be sure they do not get moist which can affect readings from the test strip. Follow directions on the container they come in and take the reading right away after dipping the test strip in the water as the colors can change over time after the test is taken.

How to Drain a Hot Tub with Interior Valve

drain valve for QCA spasSome hot tubs have an interior drain valve located underneath the spa cabinet. To access the drain valve, remove the side panel closest to the valve and hook up a standard garden hose to the threaded fitting. Then open the tap and let gravity do its job.

These types of gravity drains are also found mounted to the exterior of some spas.

Some hot tubs do not have a drain valve at all. To empty this type of spa, it is best to use a submersible pump (and fastest too).

Alternatively, a garden hose can be inserted into the spa water, then turn the water supply valve on until all air is out of the hose. Then stop the water flow from the supply side and unscrew the filled hose from the tap/supply. The water will use gravity suction and run out of the hose in reverse.  This is a simple way of draining a hot tub that does not have a dedicated drain valve.

But the fastest way to drain any spa with or without a drain valve is to buy a submersible pump.

hot tub interior drain valveIf using the internal drain found on some spa models, be sure to close the cap again when finished with the draining operation in order to avoid air getting sucked into the plumbing lines via the drain connector.  If air is allowed to enter the plumbing, then poor performance or even air pockets can develop.

Be sure to rinse off the filter when refilling the spa and replace the filter entirely every year. Enjoy your newly filled hot tub.

QCA Spa Cabinet Removal

To remove the new style QCA Spas side panels, simply flex the board slightly and remove.  Some models may have layers of polystyrene behind the boards that also may need to be carefully removed when accessing interior components during a service or interior inspection.  Replace the panels the same way being sure to replace any interior insulation panels first and then get the tongue and groove boards into the guide rails on the top and bottom of the cabinet.

This style of cabinet allows for easy access to any point underneath the cabinet.Drain Adapter for QCA Spas

Old style QCA Spa panels were single large panels that spanned an entire side of the spa.  There were 4 of those type that required the removal of 6-8 stainless steel screws.

The old style cabinets used an exterior drain and drain adapter.

Most of the newer spas use the new system of integrated boards.  These are also reversible in the case one side gets scratched or damaged.

Mineral Sticks for Easy Hot Tub Water Care

Mhot tub mineral stickineral sticks by Frog, Nature 2 and Leisure Time are cartridges that insert right into the filter compartment and allow for a reduction in chemical sanitizer. Although the mineral stick does not replace bromine or chlorine, quantities of the sanitizer can be reduced when using a mineral stick.

The mineral stick helps kill bacteria by dissolving trace amounts of mineral material into the water while being odorless.  It works by producing positive ions that destroy negative charged bacteria cells.

Most mineral sticks work together with a built-in ozonator to help reduce bromine or chlorine needed.  Just put the cartridge in the filter housing area, it does not need to be mounted.  Never mount a mineral stick inside the plumbing of a spa.  Some filters will allow for the stick to go inside the filter if the filter is longer than about 7″, but just putting in the housing or in the filter basket area is adequate.  Replace the stick every 3-4 months.

frog mineral stickKeep your water safe, free from harmful bacteria and sparkling clean with a mineral stick in addition to reduced amounts of chlorine or bromine. That means less chemical smell and less skin irritation.  Never mix bromine and chlorine.

The frog mineral stick is green, like a frog and fits right in the filter compartment of most spas.  Follow the directions by snapping off the end and inserting into filter cartridge area.  This works with spas up to 1,000 gallons.  One stick will last 3-4 months.

Hot Tub Spa Plumbing Repair Tips

plumbing parts onlineHot tub sprung a leak?

PVC parts and glue may be needed to fix the leak. Common hot tub PVC plastic parts include elbows, tees, reducers, hose or pipe and unions.

Manifolds direct the water from a larger hose or pipe to several smaller hoses that usually connect to jets.  Most hot tub manufacturers use a manifold plumbing system in order to assure even pressure at every jet. Basically the water manifold is a water splitter and the air manifold is an air splitter.

spa plumbing parts onlineA spa that is left empty in the freezing winter may have a cracked manifold or two.  Those can usually be found easily because water comes gushing out of them as soon as the hot tub is refilled after the season.  This is why it is important to properly winterize the spa or just leaving it full over the winter, even if the temperature is turned down. Leaving the hot tub filled also allows the freeze protect systems in the controls to work.

When glueing parts together, it is first important to dry-fit them to assure they will all fit in the right place. Then apply glue in a circular motion around and around both joints to be connected. This also builds up heat and allows the two parts to bond better.  Use a fast drying PVC glue ideal for hot tub use.

Some hot tub techs like using a primer first to assure a better bond. This is a good practise, but many times just gluing 2 brand new, dry joints is also adequate when using a good PVC glue. Never hurts to prime and it does pre-treat the connection for a sure fit.

Ohot tub spa partsnce the PVC glue has cured (usually best to leave it for 24 hours or so even if dry in 5-10 minutes as is the case with the fast drying WeldOn type of glue), then refill the spa and check the connection as well as for any other leaks.

As long as the spa is not of the fully foamed type, getting at and repairing leaks is a straightforward process most of the time.
